TikTok announces new community guidelines for creators safety
New policies target misinformation, consolidate rules on harmful content, and expand creator accountability—effective September 13
TikTok has announced its new updated community guidelines on Thursday.
According to the company’s Global Head of Trust and Safety, Sundeep Gaurav blog post, these changes will be implemented from Septemtember 13. These objective of these changes is to make the rules and regulations of the platform more clear and easy for its audience.
In new guidelines, there is a summary in the start of every policy. Along with new policies, new formats were also introduced. For example, new rules were implemented for wrong information (misinformation), however a new policy related to gambling, alcohol, tobacco, drugs and weapons were also introduced. Apart from this, bullying policies were also made better.
Audience can now compare the old and new guidelines. Safety and politeness, mental and behavioral health, senstive and adult topics, integrity and authentication, regulated goods, and trade activities, privacy and security related rules are now clearly visible on the page.
Before, the main page had content moderation section, in which same things are discussed with some changes. However, the word of trust worthy is now removed. Now it is said, “We want to make TikTok safe, interesting and creative for everyone”
In the section of wrong information, some words are changed. For example, previously unconfirmed emergency information was ineligible for ‘For You Feed’, now the same thing is said for crises and big city events.
Accounts and features sections were also changed, in which new features for TikTok Live, search, outer link, comments, direct messages and monitization are introduced. This section is vast and is clearly stated that which things are against rules and regulations.
For example, in the part of TikTok Live it is said that during TikTok live session, all responsiblity is of the creator, weather they are voice to text like third party tools. If voice to text reads any harmful discussion, then activators of this tool are responsible for it.
The expansions on what LIVES aren’t eligible for the For You Feed include if a session shows “low quality content” like a blank screen, or content that can be a cause of anxiety or fear, such as scary make-up are also included.”
Comment section is also increased. TikTok said that those comments in which there is no extra talks, like offensive or obsece comments, can be arranged in the end.
According to Sundeep Gaurav, these changes are inspired after disccusions from creators, experts and different organizations. App has also instructed its moderators to apply these new rules. He said that TikTok will continue its investment in recent technologies related to humans and Artificial intelligence
This recent updates came after a few while when new features like fact-checking and parental control were introduced last month.
